Xiangwu Lou of China held his nerve to clinch gold at the DAGOC Challenge despite strong competition from Vietnam's Quoc Cuong Tran, who matched him almost shot for shot in a tense 50m pistol final.

Their showdown at Lusail Shooting Complex outside Doha on Saturday 16 September was an exhibition of concentration and control, with the slightest unsteadiness of the hand determining who would win gold.

And the Vietnamese almost clinched it on the very last shot, firing a near-perfect 10.6 as Lou struck outside the bull on 8.6. It was just enough to take top spot on the podium, Lou emerging relieved and triumphant as he scraped home by 0.3 of a point.

The Chinese shooter's 94.5 in the final 10 rounds of shooting gave him a winning total of 647.5, with Lou's 553 points from qualifying ensuring that Tran's higher score of 97.2 in the final didn't overhaul him.
