Triple world record holder and Olympic Champion, legendary middle distance runner and ASPIRE Ambassador Hicham El Guerrouj led a unique fitness programme at Al Bidaa Park in Doha from Sunday, as part of ASPIRE’s ongoing campaign to boost involvement in sport and exercise.

El Guerrouj demonstrated a number of running, warm-up and training exercises at the special ‘Park Performance’ event, taking a class of students and young athletes through a challenging programme.

In his role as an ASPIRE Ambassador, El Guerrouj works with the Academy to offer guidance for current student athletes as well as supporting wider sports inclusion programmes in the Middle East and beyond.

The ‘Park Performance’ event is a new initiative from ASPIRE, designed to encourage more people to take an interest in the health benefits of outdoor exercise. Members of the public and organised groups from local schools and colleges are welcome to join in the activity.

El Guerrouj said: “ASPIRE plays an important role in inspiring people across the region to take an active interest in sport, whatever their age and current level of fitness. The Park Performance programme will provide people with an ideal opportunity to test their fitness levels and learn more about the benefits of putting their running shoes on.”

El Guerrouj, who holds the world record for the 1,500 meters, the mile and 2,000 meters, is actively involved in projects around the world to promote distance running and sporting development.

Dr. Thomas Flock, Director General at ASPIRE, said: “We are delighted that ASPIRE’s Ambassador Hicham El Guerrouj has joined us for this special interactive community activity.

“Hicham is a true sporting icon who has demonstrated time and again the link between dedication and sporting achievement. His involvement in this programme adds both expertise and sporting insight, and underlines how seriously we all take the promotion of sport and healthy lifestyles.”

In addition to leading the ‘Park Performance’ event, El Guerrouj will also be involved in a number of training and development activities with ASPIRE students during his trip to Qatar.

El Guerrouj was named ‘Best Athlete of the Year’ by the IAAF in 2001 and 2002, becoming the first man to win consecutive titles since the award was created in 1988.

The Park Performance Event took place on Sunday, 22 April, from 5pm – 7:30pm in the Al Bidaa Park Amphitheatre, Doha.
