De burgemeester van Rio de Janeiro heeft gisteren,het pas zes jaar oude stadion Joao Havelange, tot nader order gesloten. Er zijn structurele problemen met de dakconstructie. Hoewel die niet direct bedreigend zijn is er toch besloten het Olympische stadion voor onbepaalde tijd te sluiten. Het stadion, vernoemt naar de bekende oud voorzitter FIFA Havelange, fungeert op dit moment als belangrijkste voetbalstadion van Rio als gevolg van de renovatie van Maracana. Deze laatste wordt verbouwd voor de Confederations Cup in Juni en het WK van 2014. Het ligt echter ver achter op schema en ook de opening in April is later dan gepland. Het Olympisch stadion ligt in een achterstandswijk en heeft als vaste bespeler Botafogo. Hier moeten in 2016 de olympische atletiekwedstrijden worden gehouden. Daarvoor moet de huidige capaciteit van 46.000 plaatsen naar 60.000 worden uitgebreid middels een renovatie die gepland stond voor september dit jaar. Hoe het verder gaat is afwachten. The Joao Havelange Stadium was closed on Tuesday after structural problems were detected within its roof. The venue was built for Rio’s hosting of the 2007 Pan American Games at a cost of US$188 million and currently serves as the city’s main football venue whilst the Maracana undergoes redevelopment for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Commenting on the situation on Wednesday, spokesman Mark Adams told the Associated Press that the IOC is “in regular contact with Rio 2016”. He added: “There are still more than three-and-a-half years to go before the Games and we are absolutely confident that they will deliver.” IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said: “We have noted this and will keep a very close eye on developments.” Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said: “Today, they informed me that the roof has structural problems. I asked whether this represented a risk for spectators and they told me it did, depending on the wind speed and temperature. On that basis, I immediately decided to close the stadium until we receive more information. It’s simply unacceptable that a stadium which was inaugurated such a short time ago now has to face this sort of situation.” The capacity of the Joao Havelange Stadium will be permanently increased from 45,000 to 60,000 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Extensive urban improvements will also be implemented around the stadium precinct.
