The sixth visit of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will get underway this week (19-21 March) in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Led by its Chair, IOC Vice-President and Olympian Nawal El Moutawakel, the Commission will hold meetings with the local organisers and their government partners in order to receive the latest progress updates on the Games preparations. The Commission is also expected to visit some of the venues during its three-day stay.

This will be the first visit of the Commission since the successful Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games came to a close and signals the start of Rio 2016’s time as the next city in line to host the Olympic Games. During the meetings that will be held with the organisers, the Commission will examine a number of important areas of the Games preparations including, athletes services, sport, venues, accommodation, transport, test event planning, legacy, education, marketing, media services, and the preparations for the Paralympic Games
