The second round of the municipal elections in Brazil held on Sunday, October 30, showed that the voters chose to move towards the center-right, a movement highlighted by the victory of evangelical bishop Marcelo Crivella (PRB) in Rio de Janeiro and the landslide wins of the PSDB, the country's biggest right-wing political party, across the country.
PSDB mayors will be responsible for the administration of cities that are home to 23.7% of the Brazilian population - the highest number since 2000. Among these cities, seven are capitals, five of them won in the second round of these elections (Porto Alegre, Maceió, Porto Velho, Manaus and Belém) and two in the first (São Paulo and Teresina).
Another victor in these elections was the rise of the anti-politics speech, adopted by João Doria (PSDB) in São Paulo during the first round and by Alexandre Kalil (PHS) in Belo Horizonte in the second round, among others.
Similarly, the number of cancelled and voided votes altogether reached 13.3%, another record-breaking statistic - the phenomena shows that a major part of Brazilian voters are disappointed with politics today.
Smaller political parties took some positions usually occupied by more traditional parties, with 13 parties administrating the countries' 26 capitals as of January 2017 in a new and much more fragmented political arrangement.
The victory of Crivella, a bishop on a leave from his duties at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus) is a mark of the growing political and social strength among the evangelical sector.
With an openly conservative speech, Crivella was supported even by segments other than those that traditionally comprise his voters - the latter include those who are against points such as gay marriage, drug use and abortion.
The result also is likely to have important consequences in the internal dispute of the PSDB. (folha SP)
