Carlos Chinin high riser in Ratingen decathlon.

At the prestigious German leg of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge in Ratingen Carlos Chinin past for the second time in his career the eight thousand point mark in the decathlon. The BM&F Bovespa athlete scored 8045 points good for a fifth place.

With strong winds on the first day, already after two events, his record hopes were blown away. Coached by Neilton Moura the Sao Paulo based athlete scored 10.80 seconds and 7.69m but did this with (an accumulated) more than 6m/sec wind following. The points kept coming in but Chinin lost crucial point in the jumps. A disappointing high jump on day one (1.92) and a scary pole vault (opening height in third and only 4m50) on day two costs the Brazilian top ranked decathlete more than hundred points compared to his Klado all time best score, just a month ago. More than decent running in the 400m and 110m hurdles - very close to pb into a head wind!- plus an excellent personal best in the discus throw (48m38cm) kept his hopes high for a personal best. Only in the last event the 8100 points barrier slipped away. Still Carlos Chinin managed to climb one place to finish fifth with 8045 points after the surprise winner from Algeria Larbi Bouraaba. National combined event head coach Lenting sent his congratulations to Chinin and commented: “Carlos is on his way to peak performance for the Pan American Games. And he proved once again he can rise to the occasion in an international strong field. If he keeps this going he is a medal contender in Mexico later this year”.
