The Yellow-headed Caracara maybe among the most commonly seen bird of prey in Latin American cities it is still nice to watch. Today I was lucky when two of this birds followed three other big birds to a dump place. This one decided to take a look from a distance.

The Yellow-headed Caracara is 41–46 cm (16–18 in) centimeters in length and weighs 325 g (11.5 oz) on average. Like many other birds of prey,[2] the female is larger than the male, weighing 310–360 g (11–13 oz) against the male's 280–330 g (9.9–12 oz). Apart from the difference in size, there is no significant sexual dimorphism in this species. It is broad-winged and long-tailed, somewhat resembling a small Buteo. The adult has a buff head, with a black streak behind the eye, and buff underparts. The upper plumage is brown with distinctive pale patches on the flight feathers of the wings, and the tail is barred cream and brown. The head and underparts of immature birds have dense brown mottling.

The voice is a characteristic screamed schreee.

De geelkopcaracara (Milvago chimachima) is een lichtgebouwde caracarasoort uit Latijns-Amerika. Deze roofvogel is 40-46 cm groot. Het verenkleed is lichtgeel, terwijl de lange vleugels donkerbruin van kleur zijn. Het is een aaseter die ook op kleine vogels en insecten jaagt. Daarnaast zit de geelkopcaracara ook vaak op de rug van runderen om de teken uit de huid te halen. Ook eieren en plantaardig voedsel staan op het menu.

Hij leeft in kleine groepjes die regelmatig in hoge bomen zitten of lopend op zoek gaan naar voedsel op de savannes of in cultuurland. De geelkopcaracara is verder te herkennen aan zijn rauwe katachtige kreten ("iiah iiah"). Deze caracara slaapt buiten de broedtijd graag in groepjes bij elkaar. 's Morgens bij het aanbreken van de dag zwerven de vogels weer naar alle richtingen uit, op zoek naar hun eigen plekje om voedsel te zoeken. In de broedtijd wordt de geelkopcaracara agressiever en duldt deze vogel geen andere individuen in zijn gebied.
