Doha: In the first year of their training at Aspire, young sailors have successfully competed in a number of competitions, bringing home an impressive tally of medals.
At the Abu Dhabi regatta held in early December, Mohammed Al Zaini finished first and Hassan Al Tamimi finished third.
At the AlKarafi International Regatta, held in Kuwait from 19th to 23rd December, Waleed Al Sharshani finished first overall and was also the number one Gulf sailor. Hassan Al Tamimi finished second overall and Mohammed Al Zaini finished fourth overall.
The students are all 12 years old and before going to Aapire, had never sailed before.
Dr Andreas Bleicher, Aspire sports manager, credited the Qatari Sailing Federation and the national coach, Khalid Bettihthamou, with helping the students to achieve their success: "It is only through the constant collaboration between Aapire and the Qatar Sailing Federation (QSF) that the young students have come as far as they have so soon in their careers.
Abdulla Al Sulaiti, President of QSF said: "We are delighted that the sailors attend ASPIRE and we are sure that this will develop their technical and academic skills and thus create sailing champions.
Khalid Bettihthamou was the Arab world sailing champion in 1994 and took part in the world championship in France the same year, where he was placed as first Arab and first African. He has more than 27 years experience in his sport.
