The International Water Ski Federation World Cup stops off in Doha this week, for a meeting jointly sponsored by the Qatar Marine Sports Federation and ASPIRE, the Academy for Sports Excellence.

Alongside it, a specially arranged event will give the city’s youngsters the opportunity to experience for themselves the excitement of this fast paced sport.
The ‘Baby board’ event, which runs from 10am to 4pm on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April, is open to local children and will give an instructive introduction to both waterskiing and wakeboarding.

Taking time off from their intensive sports training and schooling, ASPIRE student athletes will also test their skills on the water, under the expert supervision of 12-time world waterski champion, Patrice Martin and fellow champion Rodo Vinh-Tung on Thursday.

Students will be encouraged to give the sport a try and gain confidence on the water, as part of ASPIRE’s community and extra-curricular activities aimed at giving the widest sporting and social education possible.

Dr. Hazem Fareed, ASPIRE’s Sports Coordinator, said: “The ‘Baby board’ event gives students an opportunity to experience an exciting sport in a safe and secure environment, overseen by championship skiers. The event embodies the spirit of ASPIRE, in that the student athletes are invited to do their best but at the same time enjoy what they do.

“It’s nice for the students who work very hard all year, and who are extremely dedicated, to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and the ‘Baby board’ event is a clear opportunity to reward them with a fantastic, fun day.”

With a professional team of instructors and coaching staff present, there is plenty of opportunity for ASPIRE students to really get to know the sport and perhaps uncover some undiscovered skills they never knew they had.

As a memento of their day the students will all receive a photo and diploma from water ski champion Patrice Martin, a T-shirt and a two-day VIP pass to watch the International Water Ski Federation World Cup on Friday and Saturday along the Doha Corniche.
