Rio 2016 has assuaged fears that Rio de Janeiro will not be ready in time for the 2016 Summer Olympics after senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) figures expressed severe concerns over preparations for the event.

Multiple ongoing construction delays ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup, coupled with the recent visit of the IOC coordination commission to Rio, has heightened fears that the Brazilian city is in serious danger of failing to prepare itself in time for the next Summer Games.

The IOC coordination commission warned that the Games faces “challenging deadlines”, while IOC president Thomas Bach met the ASOIF earlier on Wednesday and admitted to the international sports federations’ bosses that there was need to take action following heavy criticism and complaints on the games preparations.“It is about time for action. We share their concerns. We will address them. We will do everything we can do make these games a success,” he said during the IOC board meeting with ASOIF in response to concerns raised by 18 of the Federations who asked about ‘Plan B’ venues for their sports in case the earmarked ones are not ready in time.

The sentiment has been exacerbated by the fact that Rio 2016 organising bosses Carlos Nuzman and Sidney Levy pulled out of this week’s SportAccord Convention and thus avoided a likely grilling from Bach and the assembled throng of international federation presidents. (aips website)
