All time best weekend for Powerade team.

-Rio de Janeiro- A full weekend with competitions on three different tracks: Coral Gables/Florida, USA, Sao Bernardo do Campo/Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, proved to be the most successful weekend in the history of Powerade team so far. Gabriel Oliveira Constantino entered world list top 50 with a personal best time over 100 meters and the combined eventers Karen Lopes and Kerinde Souza picked up medals at the nationals.

Gabriel Oliveira Constantino is having a good time with the Brazil National team in the United States. In preparation for the world championships relay in the Bahamas the team takes part in different track meeting for the sprints and relay: 4 x100m. Last year Gabriel best 100 meter time was 10”64 (Rio de Janeiro) in the first competition this year he lowered this to 10”48. The national team selectors noticed his progress and he got picked for the training camp. On Saturday at University of Miami Alumni Invitational meet Gabriel won the second heat 100 meters dash with a winning time of 10”33. This was also good for a bronze medal in the overall ranking.

In Rio at the fast CDA track Comissão de Desportos da Aeronáutica, Dandadeua Asteria de Souza Brites da Silva improved again over400 meters, this time with hurdles. Despite a small error on the first hurdles she managed to get a personal best: 59”83sec. With this time she is ranked first in the season list for athletes under 23 years old in South America.

At the Copa Brasil for combined events the final stages were full of suspense. On the second day for the heptathlon it started all with long jump. With Karen amongst the medal contenders. With only three attempts some girls lost points, also Karen was a bit behind her own personal best heptathlon. In the javelin Karen improved in the third round with a first time over forty meters. It all came down to the 800m; Karen needed a low 2’30 over the two laps to score a personal best. She just missed out but got a silver medal for her total score of 5082 points.

For Kerinde Hilario de Souza Brites da Silva it all came down to the last event as well. There was a lot at stake: a personal best and a medal. After two days of tough competition he survived and got both as a reward: a PB and a bronze medal. His 6797 points ranks him fourth in this year’s Brazil ranking.

Head coach Gerard Lenting was very pleased with the performances of his squad of youngster. “It shows we are on the right track. The development pathways for the individuals are different but at the end it comes down to claim a spot on the rostrum and bag the medals. There is room for improvement for all in the near future. I am very happy with the speed over 100 meters for Gabriel which shows he has everything to run a good high hurdles as well. With these results I believe he will be in the national squad for the Bahamas (World relays May 2nd). It was the best weekend so far for Powerade”, Lenting commented after returning from Sao Paulo on Sunday.
