olympic stadium Estádio Nilton Santos.

the olympic stadium is over the years a track stadium, most of the time with a soccer infield.
track and field as one of the main attractions during the Olympics is hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well.
this will change in Rio next year.
A football stadium built for the 2007 Pan American Games, named after the Joao Havelange, and called Olympic Stadium Joao Havelange.
As longest serving IOC member (and former FIFA president) he maybe witnessing the fact that for the first time in Olympic history the opening ceremony is not in the athletics stadium but in the famous Maracana football stadium.
So far the upgrade and renovation for the stadium has not really started because of a big delay in fixing the roof construction of the Engenhão stadium. The stadium is scheduled to host the athletics competitions at the 2016 (para)olympics. Structural problems in the roof were identified in March 2013 that caused the stadium to be closed for repair. The stadium's capacity is intended to be increased to 60,000 for the 2016 Rio Games.
The Havelange stadium is since all problems and scandals in FIFA better known now as Estádio Nilton Santos. Santos, a famous defender with Botafogo and the Brazil national team, who's  statue is at front entrance.
Athletics was still waiting for the real action. Till yesterday that is.
On the warm up track, without notice to the training groups there, shovels started ripping of tartan.
It looks that, with a bit more than one year to go, the renovation has started. On the outside at least.
Word is there will be Mondo for the warm up track and competition track as well.
