Doha: The wedding tent blaze tragedy which claimed several live sin Kuwait recently has put the authorities in Qatar on guard as they are now taking steps to make sure the tents have enough safety features.

The Civil Defence Department has announced that it is preparing new safety and security standards for wedding tents. The guidelines will be implemented in all municipalities and will apply to those in the wedding organizing business as well.

General Brigadier Abdullah Fakhro, Head of the Prevention Department at Civil Defense, said that he has been assigned to prepare the regulations and standards. He said he will be meeting engineers to study the standards and regulations that need to be enforced.

Wedding tents in use now will undergo rigorous inspection, for their safety. They could be improved to meet standards and specifications.

Part of the specifications expected to be applied is the proper size of tents to be used, compared to the expected guest numbers, as well as the requirement of having more than one exits, to ensure a quick escape incase it was needed.

Some of the other standards expected to be applied is having a minimum entrance and exit heights, as well as ensuring that all electrical wiring would be channeled through plastic pipes. Air-conditioning units will be required to be checked on a regular basis, and are to be ensured that they are compatible to the type of tents being used.

Fakhro noted that Ramadan tents will also be put under stricter specifications, due to the high number of the public who visit these tents during the holy month, which is a cultural tradition. Ramadan tents tend to be vulnerable to fire, due to a number of tents whose visitors smoke “sheeshas” inside, as well as some who prepare food inside the tents.

These new specification requirements comes in light of the wedding fire that occurred few days ago, which has resulted in the killing of 43 women and children after the 23 year old ex-wife of the groom admitted that she has started the blaze.

The Kuwaiti tent fire has raised many concerns for residents and authorities in Qatar, where some have called for different prevention solutions.

Ali Al Ka’abi a board member in the Central Municipality said “The construction of wedding halls, with proper safety standards, in different areas around Qatar would solve many safety concerns for families in the country, given they should be reasonably priced, which would also assist newlyweds financially”.

Fahad Al Ansari said, “Our region has held a long tradition of celebrating weddings inside tents, and we would like to stick to that tradition, which we have held for hundreds of years” adding, “in the past, weddings in tents were simple, but now tents provide electrical lightings and air conditioning units, which can be very hazardous if not set up properly. One simple solution would be the requirement of having tents made out of non-flammable material”. THE PENINSULA
