womans day
DOHA:
Russia’s Zarema Kasaeva shattered the clean and jerk world record in the women’s 69kg category at the World Weightlifting championships here yesterday.
The 18-year-old Russian hauled 157kg in her third and last attempt to win the gold in the clean and jerk and her total of 275kg also gave her the overall title with China’s Liu Haixia finishing second with a total of 274.
Kasaeva’s effort beat China’s Liu Haixia’s mark of 154kg set a few minutes earlier. Prior to the World Championships in Doha, the world record of 153kg in the clean and jerk stood in the name of China’s Liu Chunhong, who set the mark at the Athens Olympics.
Liu Haixia, who won the snatch with a heave of 120kg as against Kasaeva’s 118, had to be content with second position in the clean and jerk and total following the Russian’s world-beating final effort.
Another Russian, Olga Kiseleva finished third overall with a total lift of 250kg.
On Saturday night, China’s Li Hongli made a clean sweep in the men’s 77kg category winning the snatch, clean and jerk and combined to underline his country’s rising stature in the sport. Li, meanwhile, dominated the men’s 77kg category and his combined lift of 361kg was 8kg better than the silver winner Sebastian Dogariu of Romania, who totalled 353kg.
Sufyan Abbas of Qatar took the third place with a combined heave of 351.
Abbas stretched himself to the limit in a bid to overtake everyone by going for 201 kilos with his third attempt after failing to hoist 196 in his second try, but couldn’t muster up the strength and dropped the barbell.
He finished third in the snatch and total.
