Sheikh Saud to inaugurate World Weightlifting Championships tomorrow

DOHA: Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC) vice-president Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani will inaugurate World Weightlifting Championships and the Centenneial celebrations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) here tomorrow.



IWF President Dr. Ajan Tamas of Hungary and Qatar Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation President Mohammed Yousef Al Mana will also grace the occasion at teh Al Sadd Sports Club Hall.



The Championship will be held at the Al Sadd Sports Club Hall, under the aegis of the Qatar Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation (QWBF) and the Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC).



Meanwhile Dr Tamas said here yesterday the world body was determined to develop the sport of weightlifting in the Arab region and added that the Arab Weightlifting Federation would be revived to achieve this.



Dr. Tamas expressed happiness about the arrangements being made for the World Championship and praised the work of the QWBF, headed by Mohammed Yousef Al Mana.



"Qatar is making gigantic steps forward. Organising a world championship is a major task for even big nations, so the QWBF deserves all praise for their wonderful preparations," Dr Tamas said.



The IWF chief observed that the Arab youngsters are immensely talented and called for concerted efforts to popularize weightlifting in the region.



"The youngsters in the Arab region, especially those in the Gulf, are immensely talented and they like sports. Weightlifting is actually a basic sport. Practitioners of almost all other sports have to do weight training. So getting the youngsters into the sport won't be a problem, but a lot of work has to be done to popularize it. Organisining big championships like the one starting here on Wednesday can do a world of good to the sport in the region." Dr Tamas said.



He said the Arab Weightlifting Federation was almost defunct, but added that a new committee was elected to run the show in the region.



"The new committee is headed by Qatar 's Ibrahim Waleed Al Abdulla and we hope things will change for the better," Dr Tamas said.



The Hungarian official also revealed that the IWF have plans to take QWBF chief Al Mana into the world body and utilize his organizational capabilities for the improvement of the sport.




Dr Tamas hoped the World Championship would produce some world records.

The Executive Committee of the IWF will meet on November 13 to discuss several issues including measures to be taken against those tested positive at the European Championships in April this year
