Doha: Fire engulfed one of the 24-storey Al Nasr twin towers in Dafna off the Corniche on Thursday morning, sending thick clouds of smoke into the sky above the city. The high-rise was severely damaged. It was unclear what caused the fire, although reports say sparks from welding work may have started the blaze.

So intense was the inferno that fire fighters from the armed forces had to be called in. The blaze spread to lower floors due to the aluminium frames in the tower’s exterior that caught fire and began exploding with splintered pieces flying in the air. An investigation is under way.

No injuries have been reported. Police blocked roads around the site, causing traffic gridlock. The contractors of the tower, according to a local Arabic daily, have owned responsibility for the fire, which the daily said was caused due to carelessness of workers.
