groene oase naast de deur! maar nog wel in de planning

SPORTS City-Qatar has been renamed Aspire Zone - an assortmentz of world class sporting facilities that will reflect Qatar’s position as a unique sporting hub.
“Aspire Zone, from its development stage is a unique site. It will be an iconic venue in Doha,” said Miles Murphy, its deputy managing director, formally revealing the new name and logo at a press conference.
“Qatar needs to be unique internationally as well as domestically,” he said.

Apart from the Khalifa Stadium, the main venue for the 15th Asian Games in Doha, the 240-hectare site is home to the futuristic Aspire Dome which is the world’s largest indoor sports facility of its kind.
The Aspire Sports Academy, Aspire Tower, Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Hospital, Women’s Club and Sports hall, National Teams Club, Leisure Land and Energy Centre are some of the facilities on the campus
All the facilities, except for the Aspire Tower and the Leisure Land, have been completed.
When complete, the Aspire Tower will be the tallest structure in Qatar at 300m. Launched last year, the tower’s facade will be completed before the start of the Asian Games on December 1. A 10-meter cauldron has been built to hold the Asian Games torch.
The tower is expected to be fully functional by July 2007.
The whole area is being landscaped to reflect a new world-class parkland and “civic identity space”.
According to Murphy, about 5km of jogging, walking and cycling track is being built throughout the zone.
He also said that about 80 hectares of green space would be earmarked for two lakes with pine trees dotting the landscape.
“It will be a place similar to the Corniche where people can just relax, have a walk, play football and have picnics,” he explained.
He said the Aspire Zone is working in close association with the Qatar National Olympic Committee and sport federations with the aim to position Qatar internationally as a unique sporting hub.
Giving full credit to the Qatar government for taking the initiative not only for the Asian Games but also for the future, he explained that the country is aiming to create an ultimate destination for a range of community, cultural and commercial activities.
“At the moment our concentration is on getting those venues up and ready for the Asian Games. But we are looking for operators to manage them beyond the games,” he said.
One of the facilities they will be operating will be a five-star hotel in the Aspire Tower upon its completion. The five-star hotel will have 126 rooms, including 10 junior suites occupying nine levels. It will also feature a sports museum and a revolving restaurant.
