zomersport?

(c) gerard lenting: spectators in a cold khalifa tennis stadium.

gisteren naar Tennis! (lekker zo'n zomersport)

DOHA • The city and its outskirts have been shivering under a prolonged cold spell, with the mercury dipping to record lows. For today, the Met Office has forecast continued cold weather, with the minimum temperature expected to be nine degrees Celsius and the maximum at 17 degrees Celsius.

The Arctic weather is expected to continue for at least another two weeks and probably throughout this month, according to the Met Office.

Several residents say that they had not witnessed such extreme winter in the recent past.

According to Met Office sources, Monday – the third day of Eid – was the coldest day of the season so far, with the temperature dipping below eight degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.

"The temperature recorded at Doha International Airport on that day was eight degrees Celsius but it must be lower in the open areas and probably as low as six degrees Celsius in some parts of the country," the sources said.

According to a release issued by the department, the minimum temperature recorded yesterday was 10 degrees Celsius while the maximum was16 degrees Celsius.

The cold north-westerly winds has made the situation even worse, forcing residents to stay inside their homes for the better part of the Eid holidays. However, residents can expect a brief respite from Thursday until Saturday, to be followed by another cold spell beginning Sunday.

From tomorrow until Saturday, the temperature is expected to rise up to a maximum 20 to 22 degrees Celsius while the minimum is expected to be around 12 degrees Celsius. From Sunday the mercury will dip again and the cold will be accompanied by strong south-easterly winds, according to Met Office.

"The chill weather is expected to continue for another two weeks, and probably throughout this month. This January is going to be the coldest month over the past many years," said an official from the department, adding that detailed statistics will be made available "very soon".
