DOHA, March 17, 2010 – HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee has laid the foundation stone for the new project, Regional Anti doping Laboratory at Aspire Zone on Tuesday.

The foundation stone - laying ceremony was also attended by Mr. Lamine Diack, the president of International Association of Athletics Federation, Nawal Al Mutwakel and Sergey Bubka, IOC office members, Seb Coe, the chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee alongside WADA representative.



“ Under the wise leadership of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of state of Qatar and directives of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Heir Apparent and president of Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar is proud to establish this important medical sport Center after the signature of the productive deal with World Anti-Doping Agency” Sheikh Saoud addressed the ceremony.



“The huge support of GCC leaders to Qatar’s initiative for establishing this center is a great honour for the country, as the center is so necessary to serve the growing sport movement in the region” confirmed QOC Secretary General.



His Excellency stressed that the lab will be an effective tool to provide distinctive medical services and detects all doping cases easily and urgently.



Dr. Mohammed Al Maadheed, Director-General of the laboratory said, "We are very excited about this project and its implications for Qatar and the region. Athletes in Qatar will benefit from the laboratory's activities, which will ensure fair and honest competition and protect their health. Furthermore, the testing provided at our facility, accompanied by our ongoing research program, will significantly advance the wider struggle to eliminate drug use in sports and promote healthy and drug-free athletics."



The Anti Doping Lab Qatar facility will be the first anti-doping laboratory to be established in West Asia, and the second to be established in the entire Middle East region. The project will be completed in four years and, in order to uphold Olympic standards of fair play and avoid any conflict of interest, the laboratory will operate independent of Qatar's existing sporting agencies, under its own governing structure.



The facility will offer anti doping testing and will conduct ongoing research into the use of prohibited substances, test-development, and other issues involved with drug use in sports. With the support of the Qatar Olympic Committee, the facility is also expected to offer free anti doping testing for countries in the region that cannot afford it.
