Brazilian combined eventers with top marks in XXX Trofeu Brasil at IBIRAUPERA

Three South American records were recorded at the 30th Trofeu Brasil meet. Simone Alves achieved high quality best female result and continental 10 000 m record 31:16.56. Ana Silva showed super sprinting shape and clocked in the 200 m semifinal new area record 22.48 (+1.0). Third continental mark was achieved in the women 4x400 m when the BMF Bovespa team clocked 3:26.68 (Neves, Fales, Coutinho, Farias). )But for combined events there were other highlights. Luiz Alberto De Araujo scored second best all time decathlon by a Brazilian with 8115 points (NR dated April 1987 is from: Pedro Ferreira da Silva Filho with 8266) and Lucimara Silvestre had a very good come back after two year doping ban and scored just two points short of her PB with 6074.
In the decathlon the start was very promising with three people close together. The same three who are on paper the strongest athletes in this two day event: D’Aroujo, Chinin and Venancio. The three BM&F Bovespa athletes came as a closed pack over the finish line. D’Aurojo clocked a season best with 10.77 Venancio scored 10.80 a decathlon pb. Chinin just missed his with 10.88. Then in the long jump Chinin injured his hamstring in the third attempt, with already a good 7.41 on his sheet, but now out of competition. With 7.26 Luiz did better than in his last three competitions. This was the trend for the first day. D’aurojo ahead of his recent personal best set at the SAC even when he dropped big points in the high jump.
The first day in decathlon was also the second day for heptathlon. Vanessa Chefer was way off from her best in the first two events put got better after that. In the lead was from the first moment Lucimara Silvestre da Silva and she got her eyes on het personal best (set in Beijing Olympics). She scored a life time best in the high jump clearing 1m.84cm but ran a painfull 200 meters in 25.27 whilst her calve cramped coming of the curve. With a very good long jump she just needed a 40+ throw with the javelin. But this did not work out the way she planned it when the javelin was on the ground just short of 38 meters. So it came down to the last event. Chefer lead all the way and Silvestre trailing by a couple of meters. In the end she came just two points short of her goals: area record and pb. Still she got a new meeting record and once again did the standard for PAG. Vanessa Chefer Spinola (5545) may need another competition to do this standard 5750 as well. Junior Tamara De Souza came third 5448. She did better in the hurdles and the last two events compared to her 5477 wind aided score in the Pan Am junior games last month in Florida (USA). "It looks like there can be three girls over 6000 pretty soon" said the Dutch national coach for hepathlon, Gerard Lenting, after the finish.

The second day started slowly for the overnight leader in the decathlon. Coming almost last out of the blocks he could not catch his teammate Anderson who clocled 14.05 against 14.48 for Luiz. A massive haul with the discus proved that Luiz was on track for the WC standard: 47m41cm. When Venancio jumped 5.00m D’Aurojo was already watching with 4.70 in the bag. The both saw Chile born Barroilhet sail over 5.30m. to close the 300 point gap with almost 200. Anderson Venancio booked another win, when he threw 59.39 with the javelin and on the way to get about 7900 points. But in the final event Luiz d’Aroujo had his eyes set on the CBAT standard for the Worlds end of this month in South Korea. Keeping a tight schedule he ran his laps in a comfortable pace under the targeted 4.35. Venancio was struggling in the back and did not break the five minute barrier to fall back in third place. Still coach Edemar Alves had two of his athletes on the highest places of the rostrum since the Chile athlete did not cound in the medal standings.

National head coach for combined events Gerard Lenting was very pleased with the performances. “It looks like things are moving in the right direction. With this young group of athletes it is possible to score top eight positions in the 2016 Olympics. There is a lot of room for improvement. Together with Oleg Ruyev for decathlon and myself for heptathlon as national coaches we help the personal coaches to raise the bar all the time and get our programm on the road to Rio”.
