The ninth edition for the Woerden International Combined Events meeting will be remembered for sure. Not only because it was windy, rainy and more feeling like autumn than summer weather. Causing a long delay for the pole vault on the second day for safety reasons. But there was also for the first time a winner at the heptathlon from outside Europe. Lucimara da Silva won the heptathlon and at the men side Anderson Venancio came second in the decathlon.
The two Brazilian athletes were a bit in shock when they found out that summer in the Netherlands can be colder than winter in their own country. During the weekend the temperature was below twenty degrees. On the first day of the competition it was Pelle Rietveld (NED) who took the lead. He wanted to break the 8000 point barrier really bad. With some strong contenders in the field scoring all between 7700 and 7900 it promised to be close. Anderson Venancio (BM&F) was the whole time in the top three with good sprinting and high jump on Saturday. The second day is always difficult in the combined events and this Sunday even more. Gusty winds, rain showers and dropping temperature proved to be too much for the all-round athletes to score big points. Venancio did very well to get more points than his main rivals (with discus and pole vault) only the Dutchman Rietveld (javelin and 1500m) was too strong .
1. Pelle Rietveld 10.95 717 14.76 184 49.05 14.51 40.65 443 67.23 4.40.45 7873
2. Anderson Estevao Venancio 11.01 682 12.50 196 50.54 15.03 40.62 463 57.32 4.55.38 7430
3. Aliaksandr Korzun 11.00 696 12.91 196 50.13 14.88 39.63 443 54.97 4.55.09 7414

Lucimara da Silva (FCTE ) who missed her national record by just points in the Tropheu Brasil wanted to test her current state of fitness in a competitive environment. With athletes from Russia, Czech Republic and the Netherlands she had some opposition to deal with. Once again she showed very good jumping (182 HJ and 635 LJ) and this she used as an advantage to cover-up her other results. All the time very close to her scores in Sao Paulo earlier this month she used to get the last two events to beat her closest rival Nadine Broersen from the Netherlands. When Broersen lost many points in the javelin where Lucimara scored the same compared to last time she needed to run a controlled 800. In the final she did even beter than that running her third fastest time in her heptathlon career with 2min17.53sec’s. Her score was also the third points score ever and with 5937 she was the first non European (I count Coltman (CAN) in as Dutch) winner in Woerden.
1. Lucimara da Silva 13.85 182 11.38 25.13 635 37.67 2.17.53 5937
2. Nadine Broersen 14.18 182 12.70 25.89 594 43.68 2.20.62 5854
3. Anna Blank 14.12 170 13.78 25.22 576 39.99 2.15.97 5785

“With the world championships at the same time in Daegu (Luiz d’Aurujo in decathlon) this weekend the Brazilian combined eventers gained important international experience once again to improve on the road to Olympics”, said Gerard Lenting CBAT’s national coach for combined events. ” Same for the coaches who were abroad (Dino Cintra and Edemar Alves) to meet with colleagues from all over the world and share their views. We can built on this to prepare for the Pan American Games in October from now on”, Lenting added.
