Luiz Alberto De Araujo from Brazil and Ghanaian Margaret Simpson picked up victories at the 24th edition of the Multistars in the Decathlon and Heptathlon, respectively, in the first of IAAF Combined Events Challenge series.
De Araujo dominated the Decathlon. The Brazilian decathlete lead from start to finish scoring 7858 pointspoints. Despite some inconsistent performances and weak points in the throws and jumps overnight leader De Araujo produced pb in 400m, 110m high hurdles and clocking 4:32.78 in the 1500m. , improving his personal best by 42 points.
“It was a good performance apart from some bad results in the discus and the pole vault,” said De Araujo, who hails from Sao Caetano near Sao Paulo. “I am pleased with my PB in the 1500m. My next competition will be the South American Championships in Buenos Aires in June where I hope to the score 8000 points I need to qualify for the World Championships in Daegu and the Panamerican Championships.”
“De Araujo is still young for adecathlete and has potential to become an Olympian. I am very pleased with thisresult in a major competition. This year he has to be more consistent in thejumps. With his coach (Edemar Alves) we will plan things a bit different comparedto last year”, explains national coach combined events (10+7) Gerard Lenting.
During a CBAT training camp in Sao Paulo in March Lenting was working together with the top athletes in combined events to get a better focus on planning training and competitions. “Coach Alves and I agreed to modify the training and work towards the South American championships. In the next weeks we will fine tune this and start working to the Pan Am Games with a small group of athletes”, explains Lenting.
