"King of the Mile" Guerrouj to Carry the Flame

DOHA: Four time world 1500m athletics champion, sporting idol and ASPIRE Ambassador Hicham El Guerrouj encouraged all Qatari residents to apply for their chance to ‘Carry the Flame’ during the forthcoming Doha 2006 Torch Relay.

Qatari residents have responded overwhelmingly to the call for Torchbearers with thousands of applications already received. With little more than 3 days remaining to get application forms in, the double Olympic gold medalist urged people not to miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

"King of the Mile" El Guerrouj - no stranger to Torch Relays having already carried the Flame for the Torino Winter Olympic Games - expressed how proud he was to have been chosen as one of the 1,000 Torchbearers in Qatar, in the lead up to the Opening Ceremony on 01 December, saying: “These are great moments for me to be in Qatar and it is an honour to be part of the Doha 2006 Torch Relay.”

The Arab athletics icon and sporting goodwill ambassador for children’s humanitarian charity UNICEF wants everyone to be involved. “If you’re not selected as a Torchbearer, there are still opportunities to share in the excitement and spirit of the event,” he said, “such as coming to watch along the route of the Torch Relay as it passes through your community or joining in the local celebrations.”

The Doha 2006 Torch Relay will begin its epic journey after a spectacular Flame Lighting Ceremony on 8 October 2006. It will travel to more than 15 countries and regions, before returning to Qatar on 25 November 2006. The Torch will pass through 23 cities and conclude with a daily celebration fusing Qatari and Asian cultures in colourful festivities.

The Torch will arrive in Qatar from Bahrain at Al Shamal Port. It will then travel through villages and cities throughout the country, including Al Zubara, Dukhan, the Inland Sea, Al Wakra, Al Khor Community and Doha itself, before lighting the cauldron on 1 December at the Opening Ceremony to mark the official commencement of the Games.

“This is truly a unique opportunity for all Qatari residents,” said Abdulla Khalid Al Qahtani, Director General of DAGOC.

“When the Torch Relay arrives in Qatar on 25 November there will be one week remaining to the Opening Ceremony of the 15th Asian Games, this will be a defining moment in the sporting history of our nation.”
Torchbearers for the Qatar leg of the journey will be selected by a random draw on 3 September 2006 and announced in the local media.
