Vandaag een extra vrije dag. Per decreet is 18 December uitgeroepen tot nationale feestdag. Dat kwam alle expats lekker uit want direct daarna begint Eid al Adha (slachtfeest) en dat is ook 4 dagen vrij. Dit tweede 'grote feest' (het suikerfeest wordt gezien als het eerste kleine feest) is de tijd dat ook de Haj, reis naar Mekka wordt gedaan. Zo rond de kerstdagen een mooie gelegeheid om het eigen vaderland te bezoeken. Dus al mijn collega senior coaches zijn weg: Duitsland 2x, Brazilie en Andres is op vakantie naar Spanje. Zelf blijven we in Qatar om Margreet, Hans en Janneke te ontvangen. Een paar leuke vrije dagen in het vooruitzicht dus. En dus net als de Qatari inkopen doen, nieuwe spullen aanschaffen en naar de kapper

QATAR today marks its national day – the 130th independence anniversary.
It was on December 18, 1878, when Sheikh Jassem bin Mohamed al-Thani, founder of the State of Qatar, assumed power.
The late Sheikh Jassem, the Emir of Qatar, was a descendent of the Tamim tribe. He was born in 1242 Hijri corresponding to 1826.
He wisely and successfully assumed the affairs of the state amid global changes and events.
At the local level Sheikh Jassem exerted great efforts to ensure Qatar’s territorial integrity as an independent and a unified state.
During his era the State of Qatar had witnessed a comprehensive progress and prosperity in all walks of life, economic and trade, especially pearl diving. Qatar was among the top exporters of pearls.
Qatar had also seen an increase in its population and urban expansion. Sheikh Jassem died on July 17, 1913, after a life which was full of achievements. He was succeeded by his son Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassem al-Thani. – QNA
