An honour well-deserved

An award is a recognition for a creative vision, work or pursuit that can make a difference to the lives of people around you. On Saturday night, Her Excellency Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), was honoured with the prestigious Spirit of Leadership Award by the Best Buddies International, a worldwide non-profit organisation which works for the social integration of people with intellectual disabilities. The award was conferred for the outstanding efforts Her Highness made in Qatar and throughout the world for the upliftment of children with development disabilities, and was presented by Antony Kennedy, the founder of Best Buddies. Sheikha Mozah is the founder of the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs in Qatar, which has earned fame for the exemplary work it is doing to rehabilitate children with disabilities. The award celebrates the fact that the true spirit of leadership lies in fostering the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities and will further enhance Qatar’s image in the world, especially in the West, in supporting community welfare programmes.

Sheikha Mozah has earned wide recognition for piloting a number of projects in education and community development, both in Qatar and at the international level. She has won a number of awards and degrees in recognition of her efforts, including the prestigious Chatham House Prize in 2007. Qatar is in the midst of a rapid and exciting transformation in the field of education and community development, spearheaded by institutions like Qatar Foundation, and all this has been the result of the visionary policies being implemented under Sheikha Mozah’s leadership.

The Best Buddies award is an honour both for Sheikha Mozah and Shafallah Center. Shafallah in Arabic means the buds of the caper plant, which is native to Qatar, with pink and white flowers. The name symbolises the love and tenderness with which the children at the Center are taken care of, with the support of highly qualified staff and most modern facilities. The award also indicates the coming together of Best Buddies and Shafallah, two world-class institutions in their field, and will help boost Qatar’s efforts to achieve excellence in this area. It will also serve as an inspiration to other Arab countries, which are lagging behind in developing the latent potential of the weak in society, especially children with disabilities.
