The Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 … the kind of car reportedly serviced in UK
A high-powered Lamborghini sports car was sent on a 10,460km round-trip from Qatar to Britain simply to have a service, The Sun newspaper reported yesterday.
The £190,000 black and gold car was put on a regular Qatar Airways flight to London’s main Heathrow airport, then flown back after having its oil checked, according to the newspaper.
Servicing at an approved dealer costs £3,552. The cost of servicing it by air freight was £20,000, the daily said, citing the airline, which confirmed it carried the Murcielago LP640 model last Friday and Monday.
However, a representative of Dana Motors, the exclusive distributors of Lamborghini vehicles in Qatar called the report “absolutely ridiculous.”
The service supervisor said Qataris regularly send their cars overseas during the summer. He also rejected the cost of air freight as suggested by the report.
“I guarantee you that this story is absolutely ridiculous. It is usual for Qataris to take their expensive vehicles to Europe, because they take pride in the country’s license plates,” he said.
“In this case, most likely the due date for service and this individual’ vacation coincided on the same date.”
According to him, an oil change is not considered service, which is timed with the mileage for Lamborghinis.
After checking the model number, the service personnel said that “a special oil of about 11 litres is required for each oil change and costs around QR500 only, rather than £3,553 as quoted by the paper.”
“Any owner can do it by himself. No vehicle history or computer re-programming is required for this simplest of task,” he explained.
The service specialist also pointed out that the air freight for a car of that size from Doha to London is QR35,000 and “even now few vehicles are with the dealership for booking purposes.”
“You have to make the reservation six months in advance with the airlines. There is no way you will pick up the vehicle and fly it back and forth, just for an oil change,” he added
