gebarentaal

The Qatar Social and Cultural Centre for the disabled has introduced sign language interpretation for Friday sermons, which is said to be a first in the region. Hearing impaired people can now interpret the Friday sermons delivered in Arabic at least in one mosque in Qatar, located in Luqta area.

Chairman of the centre Al Sinari said, the Al Arqan mosque in the area has become the first mosque in the country as well as in the Arab and Gulf region to introduce this unique service for hearing impaired, who cannot otherwise understand the meaning of the Friday sermons.

“This mosque has been selected because it is not crowded as most of the other mosques in the city during the Friday sermons,” Al Sinari said. Not only the speeches delivered by the scholar leading to the prayers, but the meaning of the Quranic verses recited during the sermon will be interpreted through sign language, he added.

“Every worshipper has a right to understand what has been told in the sermons and we are only helping people with hearing impairment to avail of this right,” said Al Sinari.
