bulldozeren

As many as forty shops along Al Gharafa road are to be demolished to make way to a planned road expansion, The Peninsula has learnt.

The once bustling car wash service outlets, cafes, car upholstery services and laundry shops along the road mid-way between Al Markhiya and Al Mael (Tilted) Roundabout are now desolate.

The shops received their first eviction notices a few months ago which were later extended up to December. Some of the shops have put up notices saying they have shifted to other localities.

However, it was business as usual for shops opposite Al Gharafa Medical. Some of those manning these facilities said they still have six months for the deadline and are waiting for the final notice from the authorities.

Sitting outside an empty shop with couple of friends, a resident told The Peninsula: “I was working as a mechanic in a garage, which has now been closed. My sponsor is planning to shift the shop to another locality in Doha.”

He said some 300 employees from the shops and tenants who lived in the apartments annexed to the shops had to vacate the place.

A former tenant, who was spotted in the area packing his goods, said, “I came today (Monday) to collect my things, but I found that my television set and computer were stolen. It was my mistake to keep such valuables in a deserted place.”

A shopkeeper in the nearby area said, it was only a matter of time before the bulldozers move in. “I had a shop in Rayyan road and I shifted to this place when it was demolished with many other shops. Now I would be forced to move from this area very soon.”

It is learnt that this area in Gharafa is part of the ongoing Dukhan Highway project being undertaken by Ashghal to cope with the heavy traffic between Doha and the western regions.

With the urban boom in Dukhan, the project is intended to improve and develop modern infrastructure, especially in transport and communication sector.
