DOHA, March 21, 2009 - Saturday is the first day of competition in the much-anticipated FINA Diving World Series 2009 in Doha.



The Qatar Swimming Association welcomes the world’s best divers to the opening day of this exciting event at Hamad Aquatic Centre in Aspire Zone.



Competition begins Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The official Opening Ceremonies begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the evening competition at 6:00 p.m.



HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, secretary general of Qatar Olympic Committee will inaugurate the two-day event.



“Today is a very exciting day for the sport of competitive diving in Doha,” says Khaleel Al Jabir, president of the Qatar Swimming Association. “We are pleased to welcome the superstars of diving to our country and to this competition. We’ve worked very hard to prepare for this event and we hope everyone, athletes and spectators alike, will really enjoy themselves.”



The competition has an exciting line-up of elite athletes who have been training for several days already here in Doha. Participating countries include Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Kuwait, Mexico, Russia, Qatar, and Ukraine.



The six member team from Germany is competing for the first time in Doha and has been looking forward to the event. Berlin’s Patrick Hausding is impressed with Doha and the venue. “Doha is like an oasis in the desert with many luxurious homes and cars,” he says. “We have a strong team and our training is going well. This is our first event since the Beijing Olympics and we’re happy to be here. The pool is very modern and we’re all very impressed by all the facilities and logistics.” Hausding will be competing in the 10m synchronized, 10m individual, and 3m springboard events.



Members of the Mexican team are equally impressed with the Hamad Aquatic Centre. “It looks like the Olympics in here,” says 21-year-old Yahel Castillo. “It’s amazing here and the colors are beautiful.” Castillo adds that the Mexican team is prepared and ready for an exciting competition. “I feel good and our team’s training has been strong after the Beijing Olympics.”
