summit
Arab leaders meeting in Doha yesterday rejected an international arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir over Darfur and called for further efforts to heal the rifts among Arab nations.
Reading from a final communique issued at the summit’s end, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said: “We emphasise our solidarity with Sudan and our dismissal and rejection of the decision handed down by the International Criminal Court (ICC).”
The 21st Arab League summit, dubbed as the “reconciliation summit”, saw a landmark meeting between Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, whose countries had strained relationship since 2003.
The summit, originally scheduled for two days, came to a sudden close as the leaders decided to hold the closing session last night itself.
