The Sotheby’s inaugural Major International Auction series in the Middle East realised in total $8,030,850 (QR29,241,371, all the figures include buyer’s premium) on the first day, in Doha yesterday. The event set multiple records for artists sold under the Orientalist art collection at the auction.

The top lot of the sale, yesterday, was an untitled work by Anish Kapoor which was sold for $974,500 (QR3,548,281) followed by Bernar Venet’s Four Indeterminate Line ($722,500). Veteran auctioneer Lord Mark Poltimore, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe led the process.

The first in the auction series, A Collection of Orientalist Art, set world record for prices ever achieved for works by the four artists at the auction. A total of 37 works of art were sold for more than QR13m.

As expected by the auctioneers, three of Rudolf Ernst’s works were sold at the highest prices with A Hard Bargain accumulating $542,500. The rare picture depicts the 19th century painter’s favourite still-lifes and decorative motifs. Ernst’s Waterpipe Smoker and The Presentation were sold at $482,500 and $422,500 respectively.

Otto Pilny’s fabulous painting Evening Prayers (1910) set a new record for the artist at the auction. Adam Styka’s The Camel Driver, Numa Marzocchi’s A lesson in Koran and Leopold Alphons Mielich’s The Dicussion also broke individual artists record.
