with the winter olympics in full swing there is some time to look more closely to the ones who are involved. so not only watching the long track speed skating where the Dutch have a big say. because I am a certified instructor for cross country skiing/roller skiing and downhill (artificial track) I watch the technique in this disciplines more closely. the upperbody is extra nowadays. (look at a posting about marit bjoergen)
I am following short track where one of my old pupils is now a coach: Dave Versteeg a former world class skater himself. I look on the icerink for Bart Schouten one of my former PEd classmates who is coaching the Germans. All the special events in skiing are supervised by one of my old pupils Marcel Looze who is currently the FIS race director. Watch the screen closely when people from SkiUSA are there and see if I can spot my friend and former colleague Randy Hill doing all kinds of stuff and some exercise physiology as well. I saw the gold medal for Simon Amman in a different perspective because my old buddy in gymnastics and athletics (SGV/de Woldstreek) Wytze Bakker is his personal physiotherapist.
And getting excited about the bobsleigh races where former athletes are competing like the Brits and Dutch crew. Of course with Arnold van Calker living in my birthplace Slochteren and his brother who is steering the 2 and 4, Edwin van Calker who was in the national squad for decathlon. But with the girls I have even a stronger bond. Urta Rozenstruik was in the bridging program I ran for CIOS Overveen and now a athletics coach. Tine Veenstra I coached in the world junior championships in Jamaica to a fifth place in heptathlon, now a police officer. Esmee Kamphuis was in my team for a couple of years taking medals at the nationals at junior level and competing international level indoor pentathlon, is now a medical doctor. The are team Kamphuis now Netherlands I in Vancouver.
Winter Olympics is more than fun.

Er ontstaat andermaal een grote rel tussen Zwitserland en Oostenrijk. De Oostenrijkse skitrainer Alexander Pointer heeft de skibinding van goudwinnaar Simon Ammann laten fotograferen en claimt nu dat de FIS onderzoek moet doen naar de correctheid van de bevestiging naar de FIS-regels. "Alleen voor de toekomst", ontkent de cheftrainer dat het goud van de Zwitser betwist wordt. De Nederlandse fysiotherapeut in Zwitserse dienst Wytze Bakker weet van de hoed en de rand. "Simon Ammann heeft een kleine aanpassing aan zijn binding, waarvan teamgenoot Küttel al het hele seizoen gebruik heeft gemaakt, maar waar hij van af is gestapt. Officieel mag je niets veranderen, maar iedereen sleutelt enigszins aan zijn binding." De Oostenrijkers claimen dat Ammann door zijn ingreep verder kan springen en proberen hem voor de grote schans uit zijn evenwicht te brengen. "Schijnbaar heeft hij iets gevonden dat hem echt helpt", zei Wolfgang Loitzl. Gisteren op de grote schans kwam Ammann negen meter verder dan de concurrentie. "Simi is overal erg ontspannen over. Ook te danken aan de grote staf met allerlei specialisten, die wij de laatste jaren hebben gefinetuned", zegt Bakker.

Oostenrijk staat zwaar onder druk, omdat er in de skidisciplines pas één bronzen medaille is gewonnen. De onderlinge stekeligheden met de succesvolle Zwitsers, de traditionele concurrenten, duren al een paar dagen.
