Powerade team finished strong at National Championships in São Paulo

São Paulo _ After four days full of action at the Ícaro de Castro Mello track, in São Paulo, Powerade team athletes returned to Rio de Janeiro with renewed energy. At the XXXIII Troféu Brasil Caixa de Atletismo Powerade team got six top ten finishers. “We will raise the bar once more to get medals next year”, concluded head coach Gerard Lenting.

100m
The focus was on the home straight for the big part of the team: dash and sprint hurdles. On the first day Bruna Jessica Oliveira Farias was pipped at the finish line and missed the silver medal by 0.04 and bronze by 0.03 of a second. The under 23 champion was a bit late of the blocks but ran a very strong 60 meters in was in medal contention all the time. “ I lost my medal at the finish line”, Bruna told afterwards.

Three times fifth.
Karen Maria Cerqueira Lopes qualified easy with a personal best time for the 100m hurdles final: 14.18 seconds. The heptathlete was keen to run under fourteen seconds in the final but after hitting the first hurdle heavily this was not possible. She finished in fifth place:14.27sec.

In the high hurdles Gabriel Oliveira Constantino also finished in fifth place. With a personal best he finished in his last year as a junior with 13”92 seconds which places him in the top ten under twenty world wide.

Bruna Jessica Oliveira Farias was very close to better her 200 meter personal best (21.61) in the final but it was not enough for the podium. Bruna managed managed a fifth place with 21.66 seconds.

400m
Dandadeua Asteria de Souza Brites da Silva is the specialist in the team for races over the full lap. The quarter miler ran a personal best in the semi-final but just missed out the final with tenth time overall: 54.81 seconds. In the 400m hurdles Danda qualified for the finals and ran a very good race. A life time best and for the first time under one minute: 59.88 sec. ranked her fifth over all.

Decathlon
Her twin brother Kerinde Hilario de Souza Brites da Silva competed in the decathlon. And it seemed possible he also would break a barrier: 7000 points, when he scored a life time first day best score 10.80 (pb)- 7.06 (pr in dec) - 12.17 (pb) - 1.82 - 49.49 = 3833.
Kerinde also started good on the second day with a PB in the high hurdles and got a season best in discus. In the pole vault a lot of points can be won and lost. It was not easy for the Powerade athlete and he just managed to master 3.80. Where 4.10 would give him a fair chance to go for 7000 points. A personal best in javelin made up some points but a run under 4’20 was needed now. A brave attempt to run a personal best got him some more points and rewarded him with a top ten position in the good field. Score second day (110mH-discus throw-pole vault- javelin throw and 1500m.): 15.31sec - 30.70m - 3.80m - 43.31m – 4m.55.45sec. total 6761 points.

Results.
Coach Lenting was happy with the overall result he said. “We set goals for this year and got about 80% out of it. So there is room for improvement. The season break will give me time to analyze and set new goals. The team slogan: better never stops. Meaning I will raise the bar for the whole team, the coaches, the support staff and the athlete one more time. Next year we need medals at Troféu Brasil that is needed if we want to compete on the highest level. With our young team and the potential we showed this year that is possible.”
