2nights the night

DOHA: Doha is all geared up to celebrate Garangao, the traditional festival of children, which begins this evening.

Ministries, hotels, youth clubs, cultural organisations, government agencies, educational institutions, banks and shopping malls have lined up festivities to mark the occasion.

The event that falls on the 14th day of the Holy Month of Ramadan is special to the region. Clad in their traditional attire, children venture out of their homes and knock on every door in the neighbourhood to collect dried fruits, sweets and nuts from the elders in the evening.

Collecting the goodies from their neighbours in specially knit bags, children can be seen moving in the streets until late into the night singing

Garangao songs.

The families gather at their doorsteps with gifts, waiting for the children to arrive. The celebrations will start immediately after Maghreb prayers and continue until midnight.

The outlets that sell the sweets and nuts did brisk business last evening. Parents, along with their kids, were seen busy shopping at these outlets in many parts of the city. There was a huge demand for the specially designed Garangao bags.
