Giant pitcher Tim Lincecum

De honkballers van de San Francisco Giants zijn gisteravond de World Series goed begonnen. De World Series is gewoon de finale van de Amerikaanse profcompetitie maar in deze wereldsport die vooral in VS populair is het dus gelijk een wereldevenement. De SF giants begonnen met een overwinning. Daar zag het in de eerste innings niet naar uit. Ook nu weer live op ESPN Brazil te zien, hoewel er NBA wedstrijden stonden aangekondigd.
Verbazingwekkend in het eerste deel van de wedstrijd waren voor mij twee momenten:
Eerst werd een loper ingesloten tussen drie en thuis maar de pitcher "the Freak" verzuimde hem uit te maken.
Even later werd een bal naar het verkeerde honk gegooid zodat er gescoord kon worden.
Klungelige fouten op dit hoge niveau.
Zaken die op het CIOS door Frans Janssen en op de ALO door Max Koops als een doodzonde zouden worden benoemd.
Maar dit zijn de world series dus alles kan. De wereld staat op zijn kop want de Giants zijn op jacht naar hun eerste titel sinds 1954 (World Series titles (5): 1954 • 1933 • 1922 • 1921• 1905) Gisteren versloegen de G-men de Texas Rangers met 11-7.

Lincecum looked like an absolute doofus in the first inning of Game 1, fielding a Nelson Cruz ground ball with runners on first and third and holding onto the ball during a slow trot in the general direction of third base.

The Rangers' runner on third, Michael Young, couldn't believe his luck as he went from trapped between third and home to getting a Lincecum-autographed get-out-of-jail-free card and safe passage back to third, leaving Texas with the bases loaded and just one out.

In the second, with Texas up 1-0, opposing pitcher Cliff Lee was trying to give himself up by bunting and failed. Lincecum should have shut down Lee, but instead threw a weak pitch that Lee clubbed for a double, setting up a second Ranger run, good for a 2-0 lead.

Then in the bottom of the third, Lincecum tried to bunt with a man on first and failed, only to discover there was no double in his future. He popped out.
