Qatar rivals UK in WC athletics bid
UK Athletics will have to see off a formidable challenge from Qatar if they are to succeed in their bid to host the 2017 IAAF world championships in athletics.
Qatar's Olympic committee** yesterday announced a bid by Doha for the event which UK Athletics hope will be based at the Olympic Stadium in London. Rome and Istanbul are also considering bids.
But Doha's entry will cause most concern to UKA given Qatar's recent track record in bidding for big events, including the 2022 football World Cup.
** DOHA, 16 March 2011- The Qatar Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation, have jointly confirmed the country’s bid for the IAAF World Championships to be held in 2017.
Earlier (last January 2011) HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani The Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee told France Press Agency that Qatar is considering ambitious approach to bid for IAAF World Championship 2017.
