my athletes of the year 2011 /+ extra

Normally after each championship there is the big question: what was the best performance. What was outstanding? At the end of the sportsyear these memorable moments are collected and after an election/voting campaign/ contest you get a winner: athlete of the year.

There are no discussions about the best performance if a world record was broken. Is coming close to a world record also good? Or when in an event after a long period of time someone is breaking new ground? Anyway, Sally Pearson was the winner after the WC this year with her winning personal best time ran over the 100 meter hurdles: 12.28" (fourth time all time).
The Olympic silver medallist from Australia had a very good season whilst winning nine out of ten, but no exceptional times till her pb in the Deague final (fastest time for two decades).

When Kenian Vivian Cheruiyot was named among the three finalists for the IAAF Athlete of the Year awards, many thought the crown was there only for her to take home. Just for the record: firstly Cheruiyot won the World Cross Country title in Spain, before, in summer, winning double gold at the World Championships in Daegu over 5 and 10K.. Beside that she was unbeaten in the Diamond League meetings and ran the world leading times over 3,000m and 5,000m.

It came as a shock to me when Australian hurdler Sally Pearson joined Jamaica star Usain Bolt to accept the top awards. I mean, Bolt? Yes his 200 at the WC was excellent but I would say I just remember him false starting in the 100. Where was the name of Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai?

Mutai ran the fastest marathon ever! in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes 2 seconds. Ok it was a bit downhil but hey it is a marathon so there is twisting and turning as well. This was in Spring but at the end of the year he beat everybody in the Big Apple taking first place in 2.05.05
His win of the New York marathon makes him the first person to win both the Boston and New York marathons in a single year.

There you go: my athletes of the year 2011 are two african runners who made a huge impact in this year: Vivian Cheruiyot and Geoff Mutai.
