Paula Radcliffe, the world marathon champion, is well known for racing sparingly but that could change next spring.

The close proximity of the Commonwealth Games, World Cross-Country Championships and London Marathon could mean Radcliffe, who raced only seven times this year, takes on three major events in six weeks.

Radcliffe, 31, is expected to be named today in England's squad at 5,000 and 10,000 metres for the Commonwealth Games, which start in Melbourne on March 15. She is unlikely to try both events but could travel from Australia to the World Cross-Country Championships, in Fukuoka, Japan, on the weekend of April 1-2.

After that, there is the prospect of Radcliffe either defending her London Marathon title on April 23 or she could accept Boston's long-standing offer to run in the 110th edition of the world's oldest marathon on April 17. It is the only one of the world's top four big city marathons that she has not contested.

Radcliffe, who won the 5,000m at the last Commonwealth Games in Manchester, said: "I've asked to be included in the 5,000m and 10,000m in Melbourne. It's unlikely that I'll do both but I would like to be there."

Radcliffe is also among the "performance of the year" nominees at this weekend's International Association of Athletics Federations annual gala in Monte Carlo for her marathon win in Helsinki last month. Britain's Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, 17, who won the 100m and 200m double at the World Youth Championships in July, has been nominated for a rising star award.
