Gisteren een eerste bezoek gebracht aan het gebied in de binnenstad dat op het punt staat om afgebroken te worden.
Schrijnende toestanden. Harde werkers die geen eigen vervoer hebben, die met velen een huis delen en die erg weinig verdienen. Als ze moeten vertrekken hebben ze eigenlijk geen andere keus dan naar een andere gebied te gaan waar op termijn het zelfde gaat gebeuren. Stadsrenovatie heeft al drie oude stukken omgetoverd in hoogbouw. Deze mannen, het zijn allemaal mannen, moeten 500QR voor een stoel per maand betalen of 1000-1200 voor het delen van een kamer. Dit zijn veelal kamers uit oude huizen. Als je met zijn tweeen kunt delen is het luxe meestal zijn het minimaal vier. Zo kan het zijn dat achter een klein deurtje wel 20-25 mannen wonen.

THE Grand Mercure hotel building will continue its towering presence in the heart of the city despite the proposed demolition of structures around it.
A senior hotel official confirmed to Gulf Times that “we are not going to be touched” by the demolition squad’s ball. He was responding to rumours in the wake of reports that buildings in the busy and popular shopping and residential area of Mohamed bin Jassim, better known as Mushaireb, will be demolished from January.
The area includes the bustling shopping centre of Doha located on such legendary streets as the Shara’a Kaharaba, Shara’a Asmakh and Shara’a Abdullah bin Thani and the meandering bylanes. The area also housed thousands of expatriates, mostly those who did not own a vehicle.
“Work was supposed to start in 2006. But the area is so densely-populated, it’s been very difficult to execute the plan,” an official of the Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA) was quoted as saying about the demolition plans.
According to official sources, as already reported by Gulf Times earlier, demolition will begin next month from the Al-Diwan Signals in the first phase, and is expected to be completed by April 2010. Between this January and 2010, more areas surrounding the Qtel signal and Arab Bank roundabout will be flattened in phases.
The clearing of the area is targeted at city beautification.
