DOHA: Welcoming the New Year according to both Hijri and Gregorian calendars, an exhibition and festival opened at City Center Doha, yesterday. The New Year according to both the calendars comes within the same week this time around.

The Qatar Islamic Cultural Center (FANAR), in association with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and Qatar Endowment Authority, opened a series of activities to mark the occasion, yesterday.

“We are marking both the new years with a series of activities,” said Mohammed Ali Al Ghandi, Managing Director,FANAR.

“We aim to give more to all who visit this magnificent centre which focuses on being more than just a shopping mall. In this way we aim to spread the Islamic culture, give services to society and help to rebuild concept about Islam from within all the different nationalities within Qatar.”

The activities welcoming the Hijra year 1430 and the Gregorian year 2009 will include the Time Expo, Arbo Art, Arabic Calligraphy, Fun Art and FANAR competitions.

Time Expo showcases 30 posters about time, dates, different calendars, clock, Greenwich Mean Time the Muslim inventors who contributed to the development of time and clocks, Islamic events that depend upon the calendar and information about Haj and Makkah.

“The exhibition tries to show how much Islam has contributed to science in the past,” said Abdussalam Al Basuni, Head of Information and Media Section, FANAR. “Islam is a way of life. It is one of the most misinterpreted topics now,” he said.

On the third floor of the shopping center Abro art workshop will be held. Abro is an ancient Islamic art of drawing on water using specialist materials. It had spread through the Muslim World and has now almost vanished. It is a fine, magnificent and unique art that the Islamic Civilisation was renowned for.

This can be seen live at City Centre through demonstrations by famous Turkish Artist Ahmet Ali Cocktan, who creates special formations in a very attractive way in 15 minutes. He makes colours using natural ingredients and uses it to paint on pure water. Each one of his paintings are unique and seldom be recreated.

International calligrapher Sabah Arbilli from Britain and Imad Hifnee from Doha will be will be demonstrating Islamic Calligraphy. Visitors can have their names written in calligraphic script.
