DOHA: Arab world’s most exotic and expensive vegetable are up for sale in Doha’s traditional market. Desert truffles have started flowing in to the Omani market here after the onset of winter in various Arab countries.

The vendors in the Omani market are doing brisk business of the truffles, the prized vegetable that is known for its nutritional and medicinal value.

The truffles, popularly known as fagga, are coming from the deserts of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya and Syria. The treasured desert truffle is spawned by lightning and a clap of thunder. Wrinkled and gnarled when dug up, and slightly perfumed, they look like lobed potatoes. The number and size of the truffles are influenced by the force of thunderbolts.

Different varieties of truffles from Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya and Syria are available in the market. The top quality truffle costs QR1,200 per kilogramme.
