All roads lead to Doha’s Khalifa Stadium today as football’s two glamour teams collide in a high-profile friendly which is expected to be played in front of a capacity crowd of 50,000. The match will begin at 8pm but the gates will be thrown open at 3pm.
The friendly is part of an agreement between the federations of England and Brazil and is being organised by Al Jazeera Sports Channel to mark its sixth anniversary in collaboration with the Qatar Football Association.
Thousands of fans from England as well as Qatar’s neighbouring countries are in Doha for the match, creating a carnival-like atmosphere.
QFA general secretary Saoud al-Mohannadi said it would be a day to remember, with the Qatar 2022 Bid Committee lining up several fun-filled activities at the stadium.
Al Jazeera plus 3 will broadcast the match with English commentary.
Local football fans as well as expatriates are relishing the prospect of watching their adored stars live.
“I’m a Manchester United fan and I love the way Wayne Rooney plays. It would be wonderful to watch him play here in Doha,” said Garrido Fernandes, who is delighted to get a ticket to the match.
Qatar 2022 Bid officials hope the occasion will bolster the profile of the bid on the global stage.
“Qataris are passionate football fans and we are truly excited to have this opportunity to watch the English and Brazilian stars on our home turf,” said Qatar 2022 Bid CEO Hassan al-Thawadi.
A fan festival has been organised for visiting spectators, with English, Qatari and Brazilian “fan villages” which open their doors at 3pm today.
International journalists expressed their admiration of Qatar’s effort to establish itself as a leading sport hub in the Middle East.
“It’s really amazing to see so many world class facilities here,” said The Guardian’s Dominic Fifield, who is among the dozens of British journalists in Doha to cover the event.
Around 20 Brazilian journalists are also covering the match, widely viewed as a big test ahead of next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
