paardenshow

It was a perfect start for Qatar as Sheikh Ali bin Khalid al-Thani brought off an amazing victory in the two star event of the Global Champions Tour in the indoor arena of the Qatar Equestrian Federation yesterday.
The talented Qatari rider returned a card with no faults and checked in with an excellent timing of 55.46 to take the first place in the one round against the clock competition.
Competing against riders from the region as well as Europe, Sheikh Ali put in a gallant display to warm up for the main event in the evening.
“It is great that Doha is hosting the biggest event in showjumping. Having taken part in the GCT, the Qatari riders have gained a lot of experience.
“We are still in the beginning but I must say that we are progressing well. We have a Qatari rider who has qualified for the World Equestrian Games but our target is to get another three riders up there,” Sheikh Ali told the Gulf Times.
Belgium’s Patrick Mc Entee, who is number two in the rankings comes to Qatar with a lot of hopes but it is the arena that surprised the Belgian who was overwhelmed at the facilities at the Qatar Equestrian Federation.
“This is my first visit to Qatar and I am very surprised to see such a huge arena. The facilities at the stables are excellent. This is an amazing country and I am really very happy to be a part of this tour which has brought me here. I am here with a lot of hopes and I hope to be in the top 18 for the final on Saturday. It would be all the more wonderful if I turn out to be the best of the finalists,” an elated Patrick Mc Entee said.
Talking about the weather, Patrick said. “It is quite hot but since the competition is in the evening, that would not be much of a problem.
“The condition inside the stables are good as it is very fresh with the air-conditioning.
“It will enable the horses to recuperate well and be ready for the next round. I have been to many venues in Europe but this one is very different and for me it is the first in the ranking for the very big surprise I had.”
The five-star event in the evening saw Olympic champion Eric Lamaze was first to really set the arena alight and flew through the gates in a time of 67.77 on his consistent mare Take Off.
Bernado Alves nearly caught him on Kingly du Reverdy stopping the clock in 68.82 but it took a former triple World Cup winner to stop the Canadian from winning.
Rodrigo Pessoa needs little introduction in show jumping circles and his ride on Cazino was masterful and ended up over a second faster than his rival. 66.59 was not really in any danger of being beaten and left American continent with a 1, 2,3 as the show.
Qatar’s own riders were not disgraced. To huge cheers and applause two of their trio rode clear
rounds, Ali al Rumaihi best of them, finishing 11th of 37 starters on Ravenna. Sheikh Ali bin Khalid al-Thani was 14th on Santos
