A unique fusion of Eastern and Western music put jazz-loving Doha audience under a spell on Thursday night at the Waqif Art Centre (WAC) as they witnessed ‘Jazz Encounters in Doha’, one of the musical offerings of the ‘German Cultural Weeks’ celebration.
The concert joined together musicians from different cultures sharing the same passion for jazz music. Dubai-based Kamal Musallam Trio composed of jazz musician of Jordanian origin Kamal Musallam and Europeans Israel Jesse Varela and Daniele Capucci; German virtuoso Volker Schlott, and British Chris Coull of Doha Jazz group comprised the group of artistes who serenaded the audience during the music-filled night.
WAC proved to be one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in Doha as the musicians played various pieces from Musallam’s latest album ‘Out of the City’, an original composition by Schlott and a Bach classic.
Musallam’s outstanding skill in playing the traditional Arabian oud and guitar was undeniable making him one of the most exciting performers in Dubai’s music scene.
Musallam has been a favourite performer at the Abu Dhabi and Dubai jazz festivals through his music with traces of oriental and western influences.
He was complemented by the virtuosity of Schlott in playing the saxophone and flute and equally talented Coull who also blended well with the group. The energy of drummer Varela and bassist Capucci was contagious that some members of the crowd grooved with them as they played their repertoire.
The show followed their successful concert at the Rumaillah Park and was part of a series of other shows and cultural events until December. Some of these events to watch for are an architectural exhibition at the WAC, photographic workshop and exhibition in cooperation with Qatar Photographic Society, German Film Week, Hip Hop RnB open air festival, and chamber music and classical concerts. The jazz show was attended by prominent guests including Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari.
