A new sponsorship law is in the offing and the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI), representative body of the private sector, said yesterday it has studied the draft of the proposed legislation and forwarded its comments to the authorities concerned.
“All I can say is that it (the proposed law) is good for both the sponsors and their workers,” QCCI Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassem Al Thani told reporters at a meeting held at the chamber premises between Qatari businessmen and the Minister of State for Interior Affairs H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.
Issues including delays in issuing drivers’ licences and difficulties faced by private companies in getting workers from nationalities of their choice were discussed. The Minister said the Ministry along with the Department of Labour and the QCCI will look into the businessmen’s demand for an ‘open visa policy’. He also ordered the formation of a panel that will look into problems related to the issuance of drivers’ licences.
