Doha • Souq Najada, which teems with hundreds of people on Friday evenings, wore a deserted look yesterday as policemen drove away the frequent visitors.

Unlike other Fridays, the Souq Najada park was unusually empty. Only policemen guarding the park and a few passers by, who got permission to enter the area after pleading with the police, could be seen traversing the road between Souq Waqif and Souq Najada.

The park has been a major hub for low-income workers, especially from the Industrial Area, during weekends since it is the most accessible place to loosen up after a week’s work and it is close to Al Ghanim bus station where most of them avail of transport.

When contacted by The Peninsula, a police officer said they were just following orders. “Many people are crowding here every Friday selling pirated CDs and VCDs, betel and other stuff,” he said.

"This is the third Friday we are doing this; the place is off-limits only during Fridays from 12 noon until 6pm,” he added.

Trigudan, a Karwa taxi driver, said that it was one way of reducing accidents since many pedestrians are crossing the street during Fridays.

“Why are they preventing us from staying at the park? This is the only day for me to unwind and meet with friends; 6pm is quite late, I go home before 8pm because I have to wake up at 4am to leave for work," Dilit, a construction worker living in Industrial Area, said.

Another frequenter named Rahim said, “They have to provide more places where we can stay during Fridays. It is very hard to stay away from our family, and our friends here serve as our only family."

Many of the people could do nothing but suffer the heat of the sun at the Al Ghanim bus station waiting for the clock to strike six so they could be allowed to enter the park. Some stayed at nearby stores and roundabouts. Others just managed to go to other places like the City Center.
