Doha Aspire student, Hassan Tamimi, has won silver in the 2008 Dutch Youth Regatta, the largest youth regatta in Europe for the Under-19 year old age group.
Tamimi, who competed against 1,000 young sailors from 20 different countries, is the first Aspire student to bring home a silver medal for sailing from the Dutch Youth Regatta.
His success is another positive step forward for Qatar in the world of international sailing.
Hassan Jassim Ali, Team Manager and representative of the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation, said: “I am very impressed with Hassan’s achievement. This competition attracts high calibre sailors from different parts of Europe and from as far as Singapore, and Hassan has made all of us at Aspire very proud.”
The Qatar team used Aspire facilities in their preparation for the Dutch Youth Regatta, and also received educational, nutritional and logistical support. Peter Lester, Head Coach of Aspire’s sailing team said: “Sailing is an emerging sport in Qatar, and Aspire is working closely with the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF) to ensure Qatar is represented at future international regattas. We currently offer three training sessions and three conditioning session each week, and are working closely with QSRF on ways to improve the programme.”
Sailing is one of Aspire’s specialist sports, and the Academy works hard with the Federation to prepare the students to represent their country.
Hassan Tamimi said: “I am really happy with my performance in the Dutch Youth Regatta. We received a lot of support from the Aspire team, the Federation and our families, and we hope to make Qatar proud in the future.”
