Doha • Three people and a dozen prized racing camels perished when two trucks heading towards Al Shahaniya collided near Raudat Rashid, some 40km north of Doha, on Saturday.

One of the trucks, which was transporting camels from the UAE, caught fire after a locally registered truck collided with it while trying to overtake.

The accident took place in the evening some five km from Al Shahaniya on a one-way road which links the township with Salwa Road. The truck, which was coming from the UAE via the Salwa Road, was taking the camels to Al Rees racing tracks.

The camels were to take part in racing competitions which were scheduled to be held in Al Shahaniya yesterday and some of these animals were expected to win accolades for their owners.

The three men who died in the mishap were in the trucks. Two others were critically injured and were rushed for emergency medical care. Fire fighters and paramedics rushed to the site of the mishap and it took them hours to control the blaze. The camels were charred to death.

This is the second major accident to happen in Qatar in less than a month. Two weeks ago, seven people, including five children – all of them reportedly below 12 years of age – died in a tragic road accident which took place near Abu Samra customs check post.
