A possible final clash between the Williams sisters looked a distinct possibility once again yesterday when Serena and Venus were tagged in the same group of the Sony Ericssion Championships 2008, the season-ending event on the WTA Tour.
The world’s top eight players have arrived in Doha to battle for a paycheque of almost $1.5m reserved for the winner.
The event, which starts tomorrow, carries an overall prize bag of $4.45m.
Serena, the US Open champion this year, and her older sibling Venus, who won Wimbledon in July, were drawn together in Maroon Group which also has world number two Dinara Safina of Russia and compatriot Elena Dementieva, the gold medallist at the Beijing Games.
In White Group, world number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia was drawn along side compatriot and French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, former US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Vera Zvonareva, the Doha finalist earlier this year.
While Jankovic seems to be among the easier group, it is the presence of the Williamses sisters – winners of 16 Grand Slams in all – in the Maroon Group that had the pundits talking of another possible final between the two American girls.
Despite being tagged in the same group, Serena said it was nothing new.
“We are pretty much used to it (playing together or being in the same half of the draw) now,” 27-year-old Serena said with a huge smile on her face.
The two players have played seven Grand Slam finals against each other.
Venus, who won Wimbledon this year by beating Serena, said: “This is my second time here. I played here (in February) and enjoyed my time here.”
World number one Jankovic said her aim is to finish the year on a positive note.
“It is a huge accomplishment (being the number one). I hope to finish even better (than last year),” the Serbian said.
Action at the newly-renovated Khalifa Tennis Compelx begins tomorrow with all the players guaranteed three matches each.
The top two from each group clash in the semi-finals before reaching the final scheduled for November 9. Yesterday’s draw was made in the presence of Larry Scott, the CEO of the WTA Tour, and Abdulrahman Saad Al Shathri, President of the Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF), at the Pearl.
