Qatar sports development in past four years

Doha, November 24, 2008 — The Olympic term 2004-2008 had seen some great achievements for Qatari sports during the major events at regional, Asian and International levels.

The 17th Gulf Cup that was held in Doha from December 12 to 24, 2004 was the beginning of the Olympic terms, where the tournament included competitions for volleyball, handball, and basketball according to a Qatari suggestion. In addition the tournament featured the return of Iraq after 14 years.

Qatar successfully organised the 15th Asian Games in Doha 2006 which witnessed 13,000 athletes representing 45 countries. Qatar bagged 32 medals including nine gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals.

HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani - QOC Secretary General and President of Qatar Fencing Federation was elected vice president of International Fencing Federation in January 14, 2008.

Khalil Al Mohannadi - President of Qatar Table Tennis Association was elected, vice president of International Table Tennis Federation on May 1, 2005 and the General Assembly of Asian Basketball Confederation reelected HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Ali - QOC Vice President and president of Qatar Basketball Federation, as president for Asian Basketball Confederation in a four-year term.

Abdulrahman Al Shathri was elected president of Asian Gymnastics Union, while Mohammad Bin Hamam was selected president of Asian Football Confederation and Dahlan Al Hamad was elected vice president of International Association of Athletics Federation
